In Afghanistan, widows face immense economic hardship, financial difficulties, and lack of opportunities. This leaves them highly vulnerable to poverty and inability to support themselves and their children. By training widows in baking bread – a highly demanded staple food – and facilitating sales, this project aims to create income generation and economic empowerment.
Widow Baking Project
To empower widowed women in Afghanistan by providing them with the skills, resources, and support necessary to bake bread as a sustainable source of income.
Our Projects
This project will establish several small-scale bakeries operated entirely by widowed women in different provinces of Afghanistan. The key components include:
Skills Training:
Widows will undergo a comprehensive training program covering all aspects of baking different varieties of Afghan bread, food safety, costing, inventory management and basic business skills.
Bakery Setup:
Widows will be provided with bakery equipment and all required raw materials on a revolving fund basis to set up and operate their bakeries from their homes or a common facility.
Marketing & Sales:
Project staff will work to secure stable supply contracts with local families and communities to purchase the baked breads on a regular basis at fair prices.
Literacy & Numeracy:
Many widows lack basic education. The project will facilitate functional literacy and numeracy classes to help them run their bakeries better.
Health & Rights
The project will provide courses on women’s health, rights awareness, life skills, and social support to empower the widows holistically.
Mentoring:
Experienced bakers and businesswomen will be engaged to mentor the widows throughout the process and troubleshoot issues. Hi ki k
- Train 100 widows across ten provinces in baking skills and business management
- Establish 50 home/cluster bakeries in the first year
- Facilitate literacy/numeracy classes for at least 400 widows
- Conduct health/rights education sessions in all bakery locations
