Emergency Flood Response In Afghanistan
Devastating flash floods have recently struck southern Afghanistan, affecting thousands of families and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The situation is critical, and the people of Afghanistan need our help immediately.
Current Situation
Unusually heavy rainfall and flash flooding have caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and crops. The floodwaters have contaminated water sources and submerged household food supplies, putting communities at severe risk. Families have been displaced, leaving them without access to basic necessities like food, clean water, and shelter.
Our teams on the ground in the Birtaka area of Garamsir District report that the devastation is severe:
• More than 270 houses have been completely destroyed by the floodwaters.
• Approximately 1,350 to 1,500 families have been displaced from their homes.
• Countless families are currently living in extremely vulnerable conditions without proper protection or support.
Communities Already Vulnerable Now Face Unprecedented Challenges
Afghan Relief is urgently responding to this catastrophe by tirelessly working to provide emergency aid to the affected communities. Our team successfully conducted assessments of 86 highly vulnerable households to map out the most critical needs.
However, we are operating in a highly challenging environment:
We aim to offer immediate relief amidst the devastation, but we cannot achieve this without your support.
- Flooded roads and damaged infrastructure have hindered movement.
- A lack of transportation is making it hard to reach remote and severely affected areas.
- The urgent need for humanitarian assistance is currently outpacing our access capacity.
