Lack of access to clean water remains a major issue in Afghanistan, with only 63% of the population having access to at least basic water services. This problem is most acute in remote rural areas, where contaminated water sources lead to widespread incidence of waterborne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, etc. This project aims to establish sustainable drinking water solutions tailored for hard-to-reach communities.
The project will apply an integrated approach combining water systems upgrades with treatment solutions and behavioral change strategies. This will ensure clean water access meets immediate needs while also creating facilities and habits for sustained safe water availability.
To improve access to safe drinking water and increase adoption of household water treatment practices in underserved, remote rural communities all across Afghanistan.
Across the country, only 63% of the population has access to basic water services. This crisis is especially dire in remote rural areas, where contaminated water sources are a leading cause of illness and death, particularly among children.
The Impact on Children
In Afghanistan, children are suffering the most from the lack of clean water. Every year, around 12,000 children under the age of 5 die due to waterborne diseases, primarily from drinking contaminated water. Illnesses like diarrhea and cholera are rampant, and countless others are left with long-term health complications—all because they lack access to clean and safe drinking water.
Our Response: Building Sustainable Water Wells
At Afghan Relief, we are committed to addressing this crisis by building sustainable, life-saving water solutions in some of Afghanistan’s most hard-to-reach communities.
We are offering multiple water well options to fit different community needs:
