A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, with its epicenter near Mazar-e-Sharif, impacting already vulnerable populations. The provinces of Balkh and Samangan are the most severely affected areas.
- Casualties Mounting: Preliminary figures indicate that at least 20 people have been killed, and authorities warn the death toll is likely to rise.
- Widespread Injuries: More than 643 people have been injured, placing immense strain on already fragile health services.
- Shallow and Destructive: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the shallow depth of the quake, only about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) below the surface, which contributed to the heavy human and financial losses.
This new emergency comes just two months after the previous 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, tragically claiming over 800 lives and injuring more than 3,000 people. Many communities in the east were still isolated, with countless people trapped and entire villages flattened.
